Maybe the biggest name in antivirus and protection software, Norton Security gets a lot right, though for some reason just has to install an annoying toolbar and browser extension. Check out our full Norton Security review to know more about its pros and cons.

Compared to many software companies, Norton LifeLock (formerly part of Symantec) has been around a long time. With the 2019 rebranding of Norton Security, its main product, to Norton 360, we chose to have a look into what has changed. Read this full Norton Security review to see how it holds up against modern antiviruses.

Norton offers browser extension software to go alongside its antivirus products. There are a few options to choose from, each with different features. In addition to extensions that allow you to integrate with products like Norton Family for full parental controls, there are two browser extensions for web security.

This dark web monitoring looks to see if any of your data is on the dark web. This is a basic form of security, but the full-featured LifeLock comes bundled with some versions of Norton 360. We have a roundup of the best identity theft protection to keep you safe online.

The other tool we use is the AMTSO website. This has six tests that download fake malware files, such as an EICAR (European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research) file. Norton blocked all five of the uncompressed files. The test that downloaded 10 compressed files had only three files successfully download, which is better than most antiviruses.

1. Norton packs in everything but the kitchen sink (opens in new tab)Norton's antivirus products offer a password manager, unlimited VPN data, identity theft protection, parental controls and even online storage. If you're willing to pay full freight, you'll get almost every kind of digital security you could ever need.

If you want full-on identity protection, Norton offers three bundles with varying degrees of LifeLock service and even more online storage. Their subscription prices run well into the triple digits, but still cost less than if you were to buy the identity protection, password manager, cloud-backup storage and antivirus software separately.

Free antivirus software used to offer subpar protection while being full of ads and suggestions to upgrade to a paid antivirus program instead. Now though, Kapsersky offers a free version with excellent malware protection. (Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition has been discontinued, although Tom's Guide readers can still download it using this link (opens in new tab).)

Many antivirus products are sold online for much less than their list prices. However, each brand offers basic, midrange and premium configurations of features and pricing, with every step up adding more features.

But ultimately, relying on any one app to protect your system, data, and privacy is a bad bet, especially when almost every antivirus app has proven vulnerable on occasion. No antivirus tool, paid or free, can catch every malicious bit of software that arrives on your computer. You also need secure passwords, two-factor logins, data encryption, systemwide backups, automatic software updates, and smart privacy tools added to your browser. You need to be mindful of what you download and to download software only from official sources, such as the Microsoft App Store and Apple Mac App Store, whenever possible. You should avoid downloading and opening email attachments unless you know what they are. For guidance, check out our full guide to setting up all these security layers.

In theory you only need that drawn-out full scan once, as real-time antivirus should handle new threats. However, as a second tier of protection McAfee schedules a full scan every other week. You can switch to scanning once a week or once a month, or you can create your own custom schedule.

Most security companies reserve firewall protection for the full-blown security suite, but McAfee puts it right in the standalone antivirus. In testing, the firewall correctly stealthed all ports and resisted the web-based attacks we threw at it. Since the built-in Window Firewall can do the same, this test is only significant if a third-party firewall fails it.

Technology in general is becoming more functional and sophisticated, and antivirus software is no exception. Most advanced software now includes real-time scanning, automatic updates, protection across multiple applications, auto-clean features and coverage for all types of malware. In 2023, we expect more software companies to include a full suite of features with more advanced functionalities in order to remain competitive in the growing market. 2ff7e9595c
